- Book of News, verse <4k1qf8$4mt@nntp.interaccess.com>: And Mike Hartigan spake:
- |
- | I recently installed a Conner 1.08 gig SCSI-II drive on my A3000
- | using it's internal controller. Piece of cake! The drive is fast,
- | quiet, and BIG! I don't recall the model number (it is an OEM
- | drive - no box, docs, etc). Price was $235 at a local (Chicago)
- | computer show. I also left my older Maxtor 212 meg drive in - no
- | more Amiga and BridgeBoard fighting over the drive at boot time!
-
- Your drive is probably the Conner CFP1080S. You can find the full
- specs on http://www.conner.com/ as a PDF file. You need a Sun or
- Windows machine to print it/convert it to PostScript (55 pages!).
-
- I'm using the same drive with no trouble, except then for those
- mentioned in another post from me ("MultiEvolution trouble"). It's
- a bit noisy, though, but SysInfo tells me I get somewhat like 1
- Mb/s on a stock A500 with a MultiEvolution and 2 Mb fast RAM. The
- 500 really is the bottleneck here.
-
- | Go for it. Given the proliferation of drives and the generally
- | good reputations of the manufacturers (bad news travels fast) hard
- | drives have pretty much reached commodity status, and you shouldn't
- | have too many problems no matter which one you buy. My selection
- | was determined solely on price.
-
- Mine also, though I didn't speficically buy that Conner, but merely
- a 1 Gb drive for 550 Dutch guilders (say about $340). A few weeks
- earlier it still costed 600 guilders and a few weeks later 500
- guilders on a fair ($310).
-
- The only thing is controllers (they are still expensive for an
- Amiga) but hard disks are getting blood cheap, especially if you
- buy an older type like this Conner CFP1080S (it no longer appears
- on the Conner site, while it still did in January).
-
- Share and enjoy,
- Peter.
